A year-old boy has been arrested after a stabbing at the University of Sydney triggered a lockdown on Tuesday. He is in a serious but stable condition, New South Wales state police said. The teenager was wearing an army cadet-style uniform, 7 News reports. Counter terrorism police are investigating. A University of Sydney spokesperson said a police operation was underway on its Camperdown campus and that police would remain on campus while investigations continue.
The boy's motive or ideology had not yet been determined, but New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner of counter terrorism Mark Walton expressed concern at increasing evidence young people were being radicalised online. The attacker was known to police and government agencies, he added. The alleged attacker boarded a bus after the incident and was arrested near a hospital, police said. There is no ongoing risk to the community, and the victim and the alleged attacker were not known to each other.
The attack comes about two months after six people were killed and 12 injured in a knife attack at a mall in Sydney's Bondi area , and an Assyrian church bishop was wounded in an unrelated stabbing attack during a service in Sydney's west.
